Let's Discuss It! – Tsotsi

TsotsiThis month’s International Film will be screened on February 6 at 6:30 pm. Read more about Tsotsi, or check it out from the TSCPL Media Center.

Based on the novel by playwright Athol Fugard, Tsotsi, is a stirring look at criminal life in the slums of Johannesburg. The story presents six pivotal days in the life of a shantytown thug or “tsotsi.” The film follows the emotional progression of a murderous thief turned accidental kidnapper when the car he steals has a baby in the backseat. Do you agree with the moral of this film -- no one is beyond redemption? The film was produced in South Africa in 2005.Tsotsi won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006.  Why do you think this film won the Oscar? The DVD contains several alternate endings with optional commentary by screenwriter and director Gavin Hood. Do you think films should reveal the alternate endings in the special features? How do the alternate endings change the film for the viewers?

What do YOU think??  Let’s discuss it!
